Carer’s Allowance is a payment for those who are looking after someone who is in need of assistance because of age, illness, physical or learning disability.

The Carer’s Allowance is means tested, it is mainly aimed at carers on low incomes who live with & look after people who need full-time care. In order to receive your payment you must not be engaged in employment or education courses for more than 15-hours a week. During your absence, adequate care for the person requiring full-time care must be arranged.

The person being cared for must be:

Over the age of 16 & so incapacitated as to require full-time care

Or under 16 & in receipt of a Domiciliary Care Allowance.

Carer’s Allowance rates from January 2011 is €211 per week. To apply contact your local Social Welfare Office and fill in an application form.
